A Pilot has been set up between an urban public high school and a regional public primary school in NSW, and more than 30 students are enthusiastically involved in the program.

Winner of Student Innovation Award for Social Impact, University of Sydney
KLAP was short-listed to be presented at TEDxSydney Ideas Search 2021, but the event had to be cancelled
due to Sydney’s 4-month lockdown.
*TEDxSydney is one of the Asia-Pacific’s leading platforms for celebrating and sharing world-changing ideas.
Its annual event is one of the largest in the world and a gold standard on the global TEDx stage.
Completed one of our first pilot projects and received overwhelmingly positive feedback from
both primary student mentees and high school student mentors, their teachers and parents.

What we have done
Approached 100 primary schools in Greater Sydney and regional NSW to promote KLAP over the 2020/2021 summer.
Set up the first pilot projects between high schools and primary schools in NSW.
Built a trial stage web platform that is able to accommodate hundreds of schools for pilots

2017-2019
KLAP was one of 6 finalists – the only initiative by high school students – to present at the ‘Make It Happen’ Final Pitch, hosted by Venture Cafe Sydney and City of Ryde. It received a Special Commendation (runner-up).
The KLAP in-person model evolved into the powerful online model that could benefit students not only in Sydney, but also around the country.
Surveyed local primary schools and confirmed that every primary school is keen to have a reading assistance program such as KLAP.
Communicated and met with The Smith Family staff on the possibilities of collaboration.
Enlisted Ryde Council youth officers’ assistance to help finding venues and tackling obstacles at the start-up phase.
Investigated at local libraries re issues on shortage of adult volunteer tutors, met their staff members to discuss collaboration with public libraries.
The birth of the KLAP in-person model, inspired by The Smith Family reading buddy program after KLAP’s founder volunteered in the program and realised the issues TSF couldn’t address.
